I've got a color shot with D&RGW 04343 in the background and it has a silver roof. Looks like it is alumicote (trailer house stuff like Mike said)taken in the 60's.
I've got two shots of RGS 0409 taken in the early 40's and it looks like it has silverish gray tarpaper in both shots. The tarpaper curves up a bit onto the cupola and you can see it there as well as along the side of the car. Sun glare can do funny things in B&W but I was convinced enough to make my HOn3 model with a silver roof.
