Kevin,
I definitely understand the work you are performing. I did the same thing with my short employment with GLRR Inc. I helped with anything I could. This included sweeping the Extra Train in the morning, emptying the waste baskets in each car at the end of the days runs, washing windows on the Tahoe coach and caboose, shining up the day's locomotive, etc. You do whatever you can, and show that you are willing to work. Then eventually they will look at you and ask if you want to be on the train. Then you can start with that. Small moves I guess.
And yeah, I can imagine that having someone look over your shoulder for 2 weeks firing will get old. Then again, I never did feel completely comfortable sitting alone in the fireman's seat. Not enough experience to teach me what to do when something unexpected happens........just like the first time I was in the cab of #40 and went to prime the injector and the check valve went the wrong way..................that was interesting!
