Water brakes were used on the narrow gauge. There was a trestle fire on a Leopard Creek trestle in 1909 and the first question asked was "was the water brake being used" (to cut down on the chance of sparks being spewed out).
I sat in on an "RGS Clinic" at the last Durango NG Convention and not anybody there knew what water brakes were. I was surprised but really shouldn't have been.
