Taylor,
Locust is of the same family as Poplar.
Locust is good in dry climate as its close cousin, Basswood.
A couple of inexpensive alternatives are Aspen (the Blue Aspen from back east, not Quaking Aspen from the west), and, if properly sealed Basswood. The last Basswod shiment that I got ran me .63/bd ft. Be warned, though, Basswood will warp to beat hell if not properly sealed.
Actually, with the low price of poplar, it is probably the least expensive in the quantity that you need it. Also, contact a wood wholesaler as the quantity that you need might be less overall as a bulk order.
Bill Pratt, don't use a router blade. Find someone with a planer and a shaper and use them. Routers are great for small jobs but they suck for a job as big as a railroad car.
