The K-28's were delivered to D&RGW with 5-chimes and always had those as far as I know. It's possible one of them had something different but unlikely. Maybe when some went to Alaska some were changed, but on the Grande...Just 5-chimes I believe.
The 480's and 490's had hooters for quite a few years. I don't think it was until the 40's before any of them got a chime whistle and even then most still carried hooters all the way through the 50's.
Yes, the C&S and CB&Q did have nice whistles. Howard Fogg's record "All Steamed Up" is proof of this. I love that Q 5-chime on the 807. Frisco 1522 had one on it when they came to Omaha in 1995. Also, two of the locomotives at the Black Hills Central Railroad have Q 5-chimes on them. Can't wait to hear them this spring. I haven't heard one in person since 1995 and I had forgotten the sound of the one on 1522. It took hearing an audio recording of the 1522 on that trip to remember.
