The Creede situation is complex with many hidden agendas possible. Real estate has gone sky high in Creede. The RR ROW is very valuable and it lays claim to parts of "improved" downtown Creede. Rents from this area are due to the RR owner, including rents from one of the major downtown land owners who also happens to be both the Mayor and the biggest opponent of the RR. Wonder why? I spoke to several major figures on the Creede scene and found them strangely divided. Most that I spoke to were cautiously in favor of the RR. The mayor got angry when I even broached the subject.
The question in my mind is this: Is it really feasible, with limited funds, to revive the RR or is this more a matter of showing the flag and laying legal claim to valuable land? Conversely, are the much publicized citizen's demonstrations against the RR spontaneous or incited by those whose financial interests are being threatened?
I truly do not know the answer to these questions but something definitely smells funny and the odor may be coming from both sides.
