After El Salvador, the next closest 914 mm line was at La Ceiba, Honduras, being the 277 km Standard Fruit Co.’s RR, or Vaccaro Ry. In 1958 it was 337 miles long with 27 steam, 16 diesel and 1034 freight cars and 32 passenger cars. In the mid 1960s W.S.Young said they offered Shay #39 for free for the removal from an East Coast port. It was former McKelvey Lumber Co. Shay #3 (3193) that worked next to EBT at Orbisonia, PA and sold to VRR 5/29/1931.
This is the most obscure 3' gauge railroad in the world where nothing is written about its existence or lack of it since 1992. Only word I have found is that they may be using a passenger rail goose within the city of La Ceiba. And Dole banana are still being shipped but if by rail part of the trip is unknown.
Only one photo has been published in the USA about the company, in Trains of April 1964 by Frank Barry.
Any chance you plan to check that 3' line out and see what equipment is available? We all envy your great trip.
