Josh, if memory serves me the 499 and 04343 caboose were stored inside the remaining stalls in the Alamosa roundhouse. I think they were both set aside for Phil Anschutz (he owned Rio Grande/ SP at that point in time) ranch near Greely and may have been cosmetically restored. I don't know the particulars of why the engine didn't go and I would love to see a photo of 04343. I understand that Anschutz is very private and hasn't granted a press interview since 1974 so any info on what is going on at the ranch with the equipment would be interesting. I think the LA Kings hockey team which he owns along with the Staples Center goes there every year for a retreat so who knows what he is up to. Now only if we could get him interested in funding the rebuilding of a stretch of RGS track in Lost Canyon he could run his caboose everyday and we all would be happy campers and railfans....maybe somebody in the D&S should make a point of inviting him to RailFair this year, you never know, once he sees what the DHS has done with #315 maybe he might like to help with the restoration of #42 which again would look great pulling his caboose along the Dolores River...
