I had the pleasure of talking to an elderly gentleman in Montrose who said his dad used to regularly ship sheep on the D&RGW and would always accompany them riding in the caboose. Once when he was 12 years old, he rode with his dad when the caboose derailed knocking over the stove killing one of the occupants. He said he still remembers that as if happened yesterday.
He, and his brothers, bought 24 D&RGW NG stock cars when they were being sold off. Don’t remember how much they paid for them but it cost more to move them then they cost. All the cars still exist and are being used for farm storage at four sites in the Montrose and Olathe areas.
