I agree on the unpleasant sound of bells made of anything other than brass. The 3985 has a "wartime" bell and is made of steel or iron, i'm not sure which, but it sounds terrible. The Austrian 0-6-2t at the zoo here in Omaha has a diesel bell because the original was stolen while it was sitting at the UP Omaha Shops.
From audio recordings I have heard and videos, the 463 has an EXCELLENT bell.
