In the places I have worked or ran at the SOP is ring bell when beginning a movement - (forward or reverse) and ring bell prior to & through a grade crossing. When working in a yard, ring bell when track next to your train has cars standing or moving on either side. This would include a run around of a train such was done on the old Georgetown Loop operation when at Devils Gate.
Hope this helps and perhaps others can fill in the gaps if I left anything out.
