I agree with Linn and John West that bells A) drive you crazy and cool smiley are largely ignored by fellow employees.
Mechanically rung bells especially the kind where only the clapper moves, particularly when made of iron, are vastly more irritating than hand rung brass bells.
Over my many years on the RR I have worked with several old engineers who punctuated nearly every sentence with "and shut off the G*D D*MN bell".
I have noticed however at Roaring Camp that ringing the bell gets passengers moving towards the train far more effectively than blowing the whistle.
