The SPCRR museum is about 7 miles from the nearest point on the PLA's Niles Canyon Railroad, in Niles.
Fremont may have the most railroad preservation of any city of its size. The Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources (SPCRR) operates the narrow gauge Aresnwood railroad, Horse drawn, over a 1 mile line, and have a collection of 12 19th centrury pieces. The Pacific Locomotive Association operates the Niles Canyon Railroad, a 8+ mile long line over what was in 1869 the last leg of the transcontinal built. Their collection includes a dozen steam locos, many diesels, and much of interest. There are also 2 city owned depot museums. In Niles the 1905 depot is operated by a model railroad club, while the carfully restored 1910 Centerville depot still sees trains from both the Altamont Comuter Express and the Capital Corridor. In nearby Newark, Leslie Salt operates a narrow gauge salt harvest railroad, and has a display of early equipment including 2 critters.
Both the PLA and Centerville depot have web pages...
The SPCRR is about to go into its winter hibernation (until April 1st) If any list readers will be visiting durring our hiatus, email me for a tour...
