I'm not sure if this will help but, when I was wandering aroung the yards I noticed some concrete footprints of the old engine house and related structures. This would be heading out of town, on the way to Ouray as the engine facilty was located away from the depot and main yard.
Harry Babcock, a former car wacker from Grand Junction, used to work in Montrose covering vacations. He did this when he first hired on with the Grande sixty years ago. You can probably get hold of him through the NRHS in Grand Junction, where he is a member. There are a coulple of other retired Grande employees that work out a Cross Orchards on Tuesday mornings. Or you can attend one of the monthly meetings and get a real ear full.
Good luck in your adventures.
