If the only goal of the line is to get passengers over the line safely and efficiently (and make a buck in the process) then why don't we just find some diesels to haul our cash crop up the 4%. After all, isn't that the very attitude that led to the disappearance of steam some 50 years ago. Hard economic choices sometimes have to be made, but that doesn't always tell the whole story. Now I'm not advocating that anyone fly off the handle and go swapping locomotives around on a whim, I just think that it would make sense to explore all the options available. Be it k 27, k 28, k 36, or k 37, these are the LAST steam locomotives of their respective type in the world and it is highly unlikely that any more will EVER be built. It's a HUGE responsibility maintaining an operating steam museum(whether primary or secondary role) and each and every decision regarding "the collection" should be well thought out, with every option explored. History, and our collective legacy depends on it. Maybe there is no future for 476 on the C&TSRR but I don't think anyone would want to see it cut up into bookends and doorstops either. At least I hope not.
