An average new tie (N.G.) costs about $60 each.
A tie machine, a tamper, a spiker, etc., would cost about $1200 a day to lease. With a trained crew--and that would not be hard to do--about 70 days would be required to replace most of the ties on the mailline, about that much more money and time for the yards and sidings. About the same costs would be involved for new (used) rail, 110 lb., with the rail joints, tie plates, etc. Just under 22 Million. Much of the rail now in place hasn't been replaced since the D&RGW rebuilt the line in the 50's. Just a couple of thoughts on that subject.
