As emphasized above, use volunteers IF and ONLY IF it is NECESSARY to save the RR during 2006 so that a FEW part-time or seasonal employees - who possibly won't have jobs next year anyway - MIGHT have something to come back to in 2007 or 2008 (if they haven't found something better in the meanwhile).
If the railroad dies, NOBODY will have jobs - not even Carlos ...
There probably aren't very many who could volunteer enough weeks next year to make it worthwhile to invest in the insurance and in training us as depot clerks or brakemen anyway. And at my age I wouldn't last long on a track gang - especially at 9,000 feet! But if saving the RR $250 or $350 a day in labor costs for one season might mean saving the RR - and a LOT of jobs in the long run - then it's something for The Friends to consider.
