Don't get me wrong, John, I'd much rather snuggle up to a nice coal stove than a slab of baseboard heat. But, we gotta be realistic. Our friends at the East Broad Top have working coal stoves in several of their coaches, but an incident a few years ago has halted their use. Seems an overly-zealous car attendant filled a stove with coal, then dumped about a quart of kerosene on top and tossed in a match. The resulting ka-whoompf! very nearly set the car on fire. Only quick work by another crew member who didn't run like hell saved the day. If coal stoves were to be used, trainmen would have to be trained in their care and feeding! Another once commonplace skill fades into history.....
