Ethyl alcohol

August 23, 2005 08:42PM
Old-timer trainmen kept a bottle of ethyl alcohol handy to pour into the train's hose before "cutting in" the air. It kept moisture in suspension for the duration of the trip, or as long as the air system was charged. Only a cap- full would suffice, as it could dry out the gaskets in the K-1-triple airbrakes.
