If the engines that you are thinking of are the ones on the Donna Theresa in Brazil, there are a couple of problems.
1.) There were three engines, one is on display on a concrete traffic island in front of the company headquarters. Probably not for sale. The second belongs to the ABPF, the preservation society located in Sao Paulo. Definitely not for sale. The third engine was also supposed to go to the ABPF, but I don't know if that ever happened. This one might be available, but Brazil has a law prohibiting the export of "cultural and historic artifacts." You'd have to be across the border before the local fans woke up to what you were doing!
2.) I had the same idea for a gauge change, so I checked when I was there in 1984. You would have to narrow the gauge by about 1 5/8 inches per side, but there is only about a finger's width of clearance between the back of the driver and the firebox side. It would involve some serious boiler work to make the change.
Of course, given enough money, you can do anything, but if you guys couldn't afford to buy the real thing when they were for sale, how are you ever going to raise 100 times as much money to build or cobble up a reproduction?
