$5000 - $10,000 to make it run???? I don't think so. You need to add a few more zeros. An operational locomotive (one that sort of functioned when it got put in the shop - with all it's parts there) of the size of say a 480, will run you $250-300,000 to overhaul depending on the amount of serious boiler work necessary, your labor expenses, and (most importantly) the profit motive of the individuals doing the work.
463 was the most comprehensive rebuild the C&TS has yet to do. 463 was all done at once, as opposed to a bit at a time spread over several years. 463 cost the taxpayers (it was Fed.$$$) $226,000 including tax, license, dealer prep and a full tank of gas.
Anyone hear what the D&S spent on 486?
Truckers will cost you about $2-3/mile - per truck. If you could actually find any remains, it would take about 3 truck loads.
A friend of mine was down there in 1975 and showed me slides he took of one of them (250?) getting cut up. The other was already gone.
