Air Pump Locations

Why is it?
Early air pumps were mounted on the engineers side of the boiler. Later they moved to the left-hand side.
Lots of C's and the K-27s were delivered with a single pump on the right. They were all rebuilt with larger equipment on the right.
Yet, C&S lokies kept their single pumps in front of the engineer.
Also, when a second single pump was added, did both pumps have to be the same size?
