I buy the point that C&TS is at a disadvantage to the D&S because it lacks a place like Durango that a tourist could make a place to stay for a while without moving much about. Once somebody is moving about a little - and cars give that chance -, the disadvantage should shrink or maybe disappear.
Taos - well, Lake Powell, Navajo, and others will try to do the same, so what's the point? Driving time from Kajenta, and more so Page, to Durango is more than from Taos to Antonito (Kajenta-Durango 160 miles, Taos-Antonito 51 miles). Bandolier is not as far as Kajenta either ... You'd probably stay in Santa Fe for Bandolier, by the way.
Last, your McDonald's thoughts are a tad strange. If the presence of a McDonald's helps people to head to Chama or Antonito, you and I may have to accept it, even if you and I don't feed ourselves there. You want them to take the train ride but not accommodate them otherwise?
Cheers, Jochen
