Southern Colorado and northern New Mexico is a region united by history and culture, particularly around the Sangre de Cristos. With the exception of Taos, this region is very poor. There seems to be more interest in Cultural Tourism these days, and this region could greatly benefit from it. Is there an organization that fosters cooperation between CO and NM to develop tourism in the region? C&TS does, but I'm thinking of a group that works with both states to encourage tourism, touting the cultural, historical, and natural attractions the region has to offer, to get people heading to the Four Corners or Taos to stop along the way and experience more of the flavor of this region. Work with the attractions, motels, restaurants, and such to offer package deals and the like, so they would all get the benefits from cooperative advertising.
Just thinking off the top of my head here, there already may exist such a group, but if so, it doesn't seem like they're getting the word out. I’m sure the tourism boards of both Colorado and New Mexico advertise around the country, but most tourists’ dollars go to other parts of these states. This needs to be region specific in order to work.
