Cumbres & Toltec Is Losing Money
In a recent letter to me, an aide of Gov. Richardson's wrote that the "Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad" is "of vital economic importance" to northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. How much money has the state of New Mexico poured into the railroad since 2000? An offer to buy the railroad has been made— can the governor's office say a private owner can't do better? Just look over at the Four Corners, where the Durango and Silverton railroad does a pretty good job at making money and drawing money into the local economy.
It is an unfortunate fact that the Cumbres & Toltec has become a bottomless pit for money simply because the present railroad commissioners and the present operator are so incompetent that there is no way they can ever get the railroad to a break-even point.
How incompetent are these people? For over 35 years, the railroad and commission has called it the "Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad" but never in that 35 years have they even bothered to register the name!
