That's if the damn thing get's away from you. If you are ready for it you can catch it with sand. I mean like when it JUST begins to slip, or does not even slip at all really but when you can feel it will. I have heard numerous experienced engineers say they can feel it when a locomotive is going to loose it. I believe it because I think I have felt the same thing. It's amazing what you feel through your feet and hands, and rear.
9 times out of 10 when a locomotive starts slipping and does it before you can react, even if you put sand down before closing the throttle, it won't stop it. There's too much force at work. Maybe if you have bad luck you'll damage something!
