I beleve you are correct that the BLC reconverted it back to oil. I remember an ancient Trains (about 1964) in Railnews about its arrival at the BHC as a wood burner. Because of fire regulations, they had to convert it.
This brings up another question. Since this engine was originally built for the New Mexico Lumber Co. at Dolores Colorado, and that company's engines traditionally were coal fired, was this locomotive originally a coal burner? If this being the case, this engine went from coal to oil, to wood, back to oil, and back to wood. This puts this locomotive in the distinct class of having been fired by all three of the major locomotive fuels. The only other shay that can claim this is Cass #2. It was the only Pacific Coast Shay that was constructed as a wood burner, later converted to oil, and converted to burn "West Virginia Real Estate" by the Cass shops.
