A golden opportunity exists in 2006 to get a bonafide historical steam freight program on the C&TS relaunched. I suggest that the Friends should be the lead group as this is part and parcel of their charter. Perhaps given his past track record John Craft could be persuaded to recreate something new and unique for 2006.
The Narrow Gauge convention is being held in Durango from Aug. 21-26, 2006 (1,000 + from around the world to attend). Durango RailFest will be concurrent; Aug. 23-27, 2006. If the C&TS schedule is the same next year Friday is the "open" day. Perhaps the Friends could even schedule a work session for August 28-31 to help get equipment ready and for folks who will be back there for the convention. The possibilities are wide open and with a chaser/ pass system that has been discussed it could open up the idea of using helpers and/or doubling the hill to Cumbres.
It is just a little over a year away, but needs to get off the ground soon to make it a reality.
