The #40 was sent to Alaska as part of a deal between GLRR Inc. and WP&YR. The White Pass wanted two operational steam locomotives for their centennial celebration, and a deal was struck for them to get #40 for a five-year lease. The money paid from WP&YR for leasing #40 was to be for the restoration and return to service of her sister engine, #44, on the GLRR. The lease ended prematurially, and #40 was returned in 2001, after 2 successful seasons in Alaska. When the lease ended, so did continued work on #44's restoration.
