Yes, DVD will probably some day be the preferred format, but until the price comes down for mastering few Rail Video Producers will take the plunge. Currently it costs around $2500-$3500 to take program and have a DVD master made. Then you have to replicate 500-1000 per run. Even if the cost of replication were $2.00 thats another $2,000, making your cost around $5-6K. This is all on top of initial costs of shooting and travel, editing, and packaging for the regular VHS tapes. Then of course you have to promote and advertise, and cover other expenses. Its no wonder, given the relatively small market for railroad videos, that there is little on the market at this juncture. Maybe when prices drop, but don't expect to see existing videos put on DVD, due to said cost. Just like the C&TS, everything is cubic $$$$!
