If you read TRAINS this month(Dec)you will get my take on sound for old films.
I would not dub sounds in these films for several reasons (a)They are all silent, and no original sound exists for them (b)One could argue that you could use C&TS,but they would be too slow for this stuff, since train speeds were higher back then. Remember, the Rocky Mountain RR CLub trips ran from Alamosa to Durango in 1 day, with a lunch stop(servicing) in Chama!!!
(c) I don't believe in dubbing train sounds of engines or other railroads not seen in the films.
If you have the authentic audio as we did with the Canadian, and other films from Mr. Laing with Elwin Puringtons Audio, then thats the real stuff and should be used. Otherwise, light music and narration will do fine. Or you can turn off the volume and enjoy the pictures which are the main object anyway!
More interesting stuff on other reels. One shot of EB from Chama on Rocky Trip supposedly had a K-28 as a helper engine, and surprisingly they did not uncouple for Lobato Trestle. He has a shot onboard the train, and later a runby of the duo crossing together doubleheaded. I think it was a 480,behind the 470?
Also a breif shot of wrecked 485(would that be in Salida, or was it moved to Alamosa later??)
Picture the scene. You've waited until late in the day for the freight to depart Alamosa. It is getting late, and its a wet highway. You're pacing a train between Alamosa and Antonito. You are driving and shooting out the drivers side, and right next to the cab and gangway of 486. The fireman eventually grabs the scoop and shovels 5-8 shovelfuls as we continue pacing. Then we pan back and see the second engine. It's 495, although the 5 is hardly legible due to coal soot. We pace some more to Antonito where the engines are split and off they go toward Chama.
This sure beats election campaign stuff, eh!
Pleasant dreams everyone! Night!
