Back in the 1920s the Santa Fe Northwestern took the Jemez Pueblo to obtain trackage rights through their tribal lands to access timber leases deep in the Jemez Mountains. The case went to federal court, and the railroad won. The railroad ran only 17 years through the Pueblo, though to this day palefaces are not allowed on Jemez Pueblo.
The SFNW was a little-known s.g. lumber road that ran many miles north of Bernalillo. It was very spectacular, running through a couple of tunnels and some high bridges. i recommend Vernon Glover's excellent history of this obscure road.
