They repaired the 492 within a month or two of the rock accident. The reason I know this is that in our last video release"Rio Grande Steam in the 1960's", the photographer was in Alamosa and chased it and 484 doubleheading to Antonito, and it was the first run after its repair. They put on a new pilot(off 490 I think), and only painted from the front to the cab. We have the date on the video, but it was just a few weeks after the accident with the rock. This was 1963, and it ran through 1967, so it was in pretty good shape at the end of the freight runs in 1968.
As an aside, we also recently converted a video called "Steam in the West". This may have interest to NG readers since it has 497 with a couple of shots on a work train for the D&S in 1991, plus the FRIENDS rotary chase train in 1991, that got stuck in the snow around Windy Point and had to get an assist from 487. 488 was the engine on that train. That was the year everyone got sick from the banquet and Fosters and were running for the woods during the stop, cause the toilets were plugged. Glad we were too tired to attend that dinner!!!
