Welcome back Chris, hope you are doing well, we miss your posts, and always look forward to more.
I have copies from Hol Wagner of HW Ridgway's notes and drawings concerning the widening of cistern tanks on both engine #70 and engine #537. The notes clearly state that each engine had the other's tender.
There are a couple of pictures that show #537 as a coal burner on the C&S with what appears to have been her original tender. These are easy to identify because of the Bettendorf trucks. Because Ridgway's notes identify the tenders already having been switched by the time they were widened, the conversion must have been done after 1931.
Charlie and Kevin have correctly offered other information as to the disposition of #70 in later years, and as usual, El Cok's eagle eyes have spotted the changes to the smokebox.
According to Rick Steele, the conversion of #70 to oil was an experiment that could have resulted in conversion of all narrow gauge power on the C&S. Clearly, it was not going to result in savings great enough to warrant further consideration and the idea was dropped.
Until your post last year (or whenever), I was unaware of the incident with #70's boiler.
Thanks again,
Mike
