Roger, the tenders that were used behind 250 and 251 were the tenders from 19 and 20, with oil bunkers added by the SVRy shop. There is some confusion I think as to which engine got which tender. As support to this, there is a story of the initial trial run of 250 on the SVRy with 19 as a helper, though I had been under the impression that 250 got the 19's tender. I have not seen photos of this. 19 and 20 were sold to the White Pass using tenders from SVRy's Bladwin engines, so maybe the tender swap had already taken place. The tender frame behind 19 currently is supposed to be 20's, but I am not sure how that identification was made. Perhaps there is a # stamped somewhere.
To answer the other fellows question. Yes we are seriously working toward building mallet replicas. THIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE. The plan is that they would have replica tenders exactly like 19 and 20's just as the original pair had. As for what modern modifications the engines would have, my guess is not too much. I suggested roller bearing, but our CMO feels plain bearing will serve and avoid redesign of many parts and a certain amount of potential trial and error. They were otherwise pretty "modern" steam engines, being superheated and having front end throtles. Not modern in the sense of some of the late steam to current inovations, but I suspect many of these things would drastically alter the appearance. We've discussed the issue SVRy ran into with adhesion, which was mostly alleviated by adding weight to the engine. I have suggested we try to add this weight directly to the frame.
As Jerry says, we have several other projects in the works, so let's see what happens in 3 or 4 years down the road.
