Taking a very distant view (from the other side of the Atlantic in fact <img class=" /> ), there seems to be a prevailing attitude in the USA that if *any* part of a locomotive is to be replaced it is no longer worth restoring. The attitude in the UK is now to replace anything that needs replacing, including boilers, to achieve the target. There is a well publicised building of a new pacific but there have been numerous "new build" narrow gauge locos and one company is proposing a series of ng loco's.
