Ron,
some of the 60 cm lines at Luxor and in the Valley of the Kings were built in the 30ies to get the debris form 4000 years out of the way of the archologists.
Motive power were men, camels (also men), as well as 0-4-0, 0-6-0 Orenstein & Koppel and Bagnall engines). Cane growing was/is only possible app 1.5 miles east and west of the Nile.
I think one of the 0-4-0 is stored at Cairo.
