Sorry Andy, in my conversations with Miz Smith I never even thought to ask. In the early days of the mine she and Ian were sometimes the entire crew, and IIRC most of their business was local. Occasionally they hired an extra hand or two. There are stories that when the mule used to pull the cars of coal out of the mine was sick, Miz Smith would take over that chore. Not an easy task as it was uphill to the portal. Obviously she was not a woman to trifle with!
