I was loaned the Burlington Route Steam Finale by a friend and it arrived today...So there was one bit of interesting info regarding the 638 that we were discussing.
Its a little conflicting since he first says that on Oct 2, 1960 638 went into excursion service for the C&S.
However he begins all this by saying Engine 638 was given a class 5 overhaul in the Denver Roundhouse. After breaking in as a switcher in the Denver yard on April 11, 1960, 638 made its first trip on an excursion to Golden on April 13, 1960. This was followed by a series of 14 excursions, which I listed on a previous post that started Oct 2, 1960, and ended Dec 16, 1962.
So, some of this stuff in April must be what your dad shot, Mike Trent!!
None of this solves my problem with the trip I am trying to document, but still interesting info.
Cover shot of the book is CB&Q Hudson 3003, and interestingly there, we have film of its first excursion run out of Minneapolis in 1957. A lovely engine indeed!!
Now back to NG!
