Right ,Frad . Also ,periodic applications of a paint/linseed mixture could add decades to the life of a shake shingle roof . When I applied a similar mix to freight cars ,it doubled the life of the paint job . Without starting a fracas ,I am perplexed by the way freight cars were painted by the Friends over the years ,using a primer base and paint .As a result , the Friends ended up painting the same cars in very short intervals . A linseed/turpentine is the best of all primers for dessicated wood , bar none . Some cars I painted twenty years ago for Scenic are still holding paint . Another step that really helps is I ground a lot of the bad wood off with a circular grinder .Though it leaves a scalloped finish , it really holds the paint .Friends b ox car 3686 ,which was he old concession car , is an example . Many of the 00 series box/passenger cars have only been repainted once since the 1970s ,with very little flaking of the paint .
