D&RG(W)practice was to paint shake roofs a combination of box car red mixed with linseed oil .Fire hazard or not , the mixture prolonged the life of the shake shingles . Close scrutiny of the Rico depot shows that part of the roof was replaced after a fire on the south end burned off the roof in the 1930s .Chama and Durango depots received green asphalt shingles at some time . Some of the nicer depots ,like Gunnison , Montrose and Santa Fe received tile roofs .
