I recognized that the three coupled engines didn't have any cars and was probably a "balance of power" move. I just thought there were some technical issues (locomotive handling---working steam, drifting and braking) and a rule against running steam locomotives coupled together for long distances without a train attached. I suppose it simplified dispatching, one train versus three separate locomotives moving over the line.
