I fired a locomotive for about 12 years, that was built durring the long front end era. Personally I felt that the extended Smokebox on that boiler was of no real value, even when that engine was a wood burner( now an oil burner converted in 1904). Because this perticular boiler was stubby to begin with, I would have gone with a short smoke box and added that wasted long box space to the barrel where it was desperately needed for steaming.
