If you can believe Gil Lathrop in his book "Little Engines and Big Men", The Rio Grande started lengthening smokeboxes when they started putting straight stacks on narrow gauge power such as the class 56 and class 60 (eventually C-16) 2-8-0's. The class 45(n) 4-6-0's were built with straight stacks and extended smokeboxes, thus 168 and 169 didn't(don't)look quite right when preserved with diamond stacks. -- Ed
