Why did narrow gauge, and for that matter, standard gauge railroads adopt different colors for their structures - box car red, in all its various shades seems to have been a fairly universal color choice.
What motivated railroads to pick the colors they did for structures? Why was there a little more variety in the colors of structures than the color of rolling stock?
What were the most common colors selected and why?
