There have been rumors for years. But think about it:
Durango - Gato - Pagosa Springs is 92 miles by rail.
a) At 20-25mph, a one way trip from Durango would take 4 1/2 hours. (Let's ignore the bus transfer to the casino.)
Nine hours round trip vs. two hours by car.
b) That 92 miles of roadbed is going to cost something. WalMart has to be relocated, as well as dozens of houses. Where the roadbed is now privately owned, it must be purchased or leased (including on the reservations). Let's be very conservative and say it will cost $1 million per mile to acquire and build.
Why would a casino spend $92 Million so that its visitors from Durango will spend 9 hours on a train, instead of spending that time in their casino? You can build a VERY nice parking lot, and give away the liquor, for much much less, can't you?
Which do you think represents a better return on investment to the casino owners?
I wouldn't be hoarding my film for the next run up Florida Hill.
