During the Winter Months with snow covering most of the ground, the arresters were often left off the stacks. There is probably an improvement in the drafting with them off and the danger of fire is greatly reduced with snow on the ground.
Now I am sure that someone will find photos of the locos with the arresters on over the winter, as always nothing was "standard" on the Narrow Gauge...
