Here is a case when a covered gon won't ever work:
Phanton Curve
Many of the best shots are nearly straight up. The lack of a cover allows nearly everyone in the car to get some neat pictures.
The D&S has a lot of vertical scenery. Between the small windows on the coaches and the cover on the gons a lot of photographers get pinched for dramatic shot angles.
