Last I had heard, 51 was still privately owned in Denver, and still in the stupid paint scheme used in "Cat Ballou". Hadn't been run or steamed in many years.
Speaking of "Cat Ballou", 51's engineer in that movie was my Dad's great friend and C&S Road Foreman of Engines, Mickey Hanson. Mickey was a long time veteran of the C&S and was most proud of a weld he made on 74's frame in the field when it broke bucking snow below Climax one winter.
51 was the last steam engine ever to come to Boulder, and it came in on the UP. I think it was in July '67 to carry the Governer to Boulder for the annual Pow-Wow parade. Howard Fogg rode on the tender of the engine. Mickey Hanson was Engineer on that trip, too, and I believe Ed Gerlitz fired. Ah, those were the days. I almost didn't go see the train, thinking I'd catch 51 on her next trip.
