9's location was told to m by Jim Saylor. He said that they have tried to buy it from the owner but he refuses. Of the 2 known perlites, 9 is in better shape. (i myself have not seen the car, but this is from what jim said).
Pat: rebuild potential is there, but very unlikely. Jim said they have looked into it, and the cost was astronomical - something like a million a mile. If 18 is ever returned to service (which is starting to look doubtful, as there was talk recently of moving 18 into a display building, one in which that kind of work cannot be done) I would say that at best, the operation at the Kearsarge site will head north to laws. (Jim said if they built toward laws, he would build toward them) 9 being returned to steam isnt impossible, but it failed a boiler exam in 1960 due to 2 bad flues, and hasnt been tested since...probably in the 500K range.
C&C2 also we at the NCNG museum have SP box 26 in operational condition.
